This is one of my favorite warm-up games for practice. It is very simple and the kids love it. We play using a soccer ball and have the players put their sticks and gloves off the field. Split into small teams (around 5 players per team); the game can be played on small fields with two goals or half-court. Handball is just like soccer except the players pass the ball in the air with their hands. We give them a 2-second rule with the ball to promote more ball movement and off-ball anticipation. Concepts emphasized through handball:
- Moving to get open without the ball – if your teammate can’t see you he probably wont pass it to you
- Getting the ball up and ready to pass, shoot, or fake rather than running with it at your waist
- Using fakes to break pressure
- Attacking from side in order to open up the other side
- Knocking down and picking off passes on defense
- Anticipating transition – staying with the flow of the game
We tweak the rules or the scoring system sometimes to promote different skills such as:
- 1 point for every give-and-go
- 1 point for every swing pass
- Fake Rule – players can fake a pass and hold onto the ball for 2 extra seconds
- 1st Bounce Rule – any pass that is not caught in the air or on the first bounce is an automatic turnover
- Handy/Footy – sometimes blow the whistle and switch the game between Handball and Soccer (the kids love this!)
- Hasketball – if you have a basketball court near the field you can use that instead – we play this basically like basketball but without dribbling and give the kids a 4 step rule rather than a 2 second rule; this way the can set up pick-and-rolls
Also, another way to make the game fun and keep it fresh is to play quick games and make a little tournament out of it; we will give extra conditioning to the losing teams.
